捕われる

とらわれる【捕われる】

1 〔捕えられる〕 be caught [seized, taken, captured]; be arrested [apprehended].

●詐欺をして捕われる be arrested for fraud.

2 〔こだわる〕 be a slave to [stick to, adhere to] 《a habit, a tradition》; be a stickler for 《formalities》; be shackled by 《habit》; be swayed by 《passion》.

●外見にとらわれる be swayed by appearances

・先入観にとらわれた考え a view that adheres to preconceived notions [ideas]

・因習にとらわれる be a slave to custom [convention]

・とらわれない unprejudiced; freewheeling

・伝統にとらわれない be free from [unhampered by] tradition(s).

●彼はあまりにも目先のことにとらわれすぎている. He is too much swayed by the needs of the moment.

・彼女は初めからこの考えにとらわれていた. Right from the start she was obsessed with this idea.

・既成概念にとらわれて斬新なアイディアが出てこない. We're all shackled by stereotypical thinking, and so we can't come up with fresh ideas.

・とらわれない目で見れば, 彼女のほうがこのポストにふさわしいことは明らかであろう. If one looks at it with an unbiased mind, it would seem clear that she is a more appropriate choice for this position.

3 〔激しい感情などに支配されて, のがれられない〕 be seized 《with…》; gripped 《by…》.

●悲しみにとらわれる be gripped by sadness [sorrow, grief]

・恐怖にとらわれる be seized with panic; be gripped by fear; be struck with terror.

●彼は恐怖にとらわれている. He is gripped by fear [seized by terror, seized with panic, fallen prey to fear].

・二度とここへは帰って来れないのではないか, 彼女はそんな思いにとらわれていた. She'd never again be able to return to this place―she was gripped by the thought.
